Portage Bay shellfish beds open, April 3, 2019

May contain: rock, pebble, road, nature, outdoors, sea, water, beach, coast, and shoreline

Lummi Nation shellfish beds in Portage Bay are fully open again for spring harvest, with enough water quality improvement seen by the state Department of Health to lift four years of restrictions.

Diverse efforts by community groups are credited for the turnaround affecting 800 acres at the mouth of the Nooksack River. The new harvest status was effective April 1.
